Bättre och bättre år för år

Via Dick Erixon hittar jag till en artikel om en rapport från World Bank, som beskriver hur tillväxten i tredje världen driver undan fattigdom:

A world of more haves, fewer have-nots

Following the lead of China and India, developing nations will continue to grow much faster than the more-advanced regions of Europe and North America. (That’s already happening; economic growth in the developing world this year is running around 7 percent, compared with 3.1 percent in the United States, Europe and Japan.)

The world’s wealth gap will still exist in 2030, but by then the size and dynamism of the developing nations will make them the engines of global growth, the report predicts.

In other words, global economics will finally reflect global demographics. The regions of the world with the largest and fastest-growing populations will also be the most productive.

Hos Johan Norberg hittar man till en annan rapport som beskriver hur de våldsamma konflikterna i världen fortsätter att sjunka i antal.

– Between 2002-2005, the number of armed conflicts in the world was reduced by 15 percent, from 66 to 56.

– Between 2002-2005, the number of battle-deaths was reduced by almost 40 percent (see graph below).

– In 1989 there were 10 ongoing genocides worldwide, in 2005 there was one (Darfur).

– The number of displaced persons declined by 6 percent between 2003-2005.

Självklart finns det många problem kvar att lösa i världen men trenden går mot en fredligare värld där fattigdomen är på väg att utrotas.

Jag minns under min uppväxt hur framtiden kändes dystopisk och mörk. Om det inte var kärnvapenkrig som skulle utrota mänskligheten så var det överbefolkning eller svältkatastrofer. Framtiden var mörk och skrämmande. Idag syns ljuset. Det är värt att fira inför det nya året.

Uppdaterat: Sydsvenskans huvudledare är idag inne på samma linje. Tänk att detta inte framhävs oftare i media. Uppenbarligen är inte goda nyheter särskilt säljande.
